Username and password required for 8hands

Hi,

I am wondering why it is necessary to provide an 8hands username/password when the 8hands software is installed.

From the privacy policy:

Currently, your user name(s) and password(s) are stored locally on your computer and not on our server. In the future, we may provide you with the option to store your username(s) and password(s) on our server, to permit easier access from multiple locations and safer access from shared computers.

If all my credentials for the sites I am accessing with 8hands, are stored on my Harddisk (I would not feel comfortable using 8hands otherwise!), why then is it necessary to have an additional 8hands account? I don't see any reason why it is not possible to let people use the client without registering at 8hands?

Best Regards,

Forum posting issue

Hmmm...

posting makes you to get logged out...

After posting a comment, I get a blank screen with this type of url: http://www.8hands.com/comment/reply/xxxx

and when I navigate back to the forum "manually" I appear to be logged out.

(I'm using flock)

(delete -> same issue)

The same goes for a delete action.

I just deleted a double posting, ended up on a blank screen at http://www.8hands.com/node/1106/delete

and was logged out again.

Username and password

Dear Pascal,

Please note that you are asked to provide a username/password in order to login to your 8hands account for two reasons:

1. To protect your privacy -
in order to prevent from any other person to login to your 8hands account and check all your latest events and private massages.

2. Username/password is the only way for us to recognize your unique locations, settings and preferences.

As for the blank page error on the forums - we are aware of this issue and we expect it to be resolved soon. we are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you still have unanswered questions, please feel free to contact us again.

All the best,

Maya.

So usernames/pswd's for Facebook, Twitter... are stored by 8H's?

Hello Maya,

Sorry but I find this disturbing...

Again, I quote from the privacy policy:

Currently, your user name(s) and password(s) are stored locally on your computer and not on our server. In the future, we may provide you with the option to store your username(s) and password(s) on our server, to permit easier access from multiple locations and safer access from shared computers.

I was under the impression that meant the username/password pairs for  Facebook, Twitter, etc.. were stored on my hard disk for the 8hands client and not on the 8hands server...

Apparently that is not the case.

I uninstalled the 8hands client and reinstalled it, and could log in again with my accounts on Twitter, Youtube, Facebook... available again.  I use a virtualisation layer, so the settings were removed from my hard disk as well during uninstall - so this means my account credentials for these networks are stored by 8hands serverside contrary to what the privacy policy suggests.

Re: So usernames/pswd's...

Dear Pascal,

Sorry for not answering your post, we've been busy finalizing the transition to the new 8hands website and it appears that some of the recent posts were accidentally left on the old database... including yours. Needless to say, all posts are now restored on the new website's database as well.

Same goes for the privacy policy. As you carefully noticed, we no longer store usernames and passwords locally, but on our secure servers.

We modified the privacy policy to reflect this recent change in 8hands' latest software update but for some reason this was only updated on the new site, launched a few days after your post. We apologize for this inconvenience.

There were two main reasons for the change in behavior – 1. Most of the feedback we received from users regarding local storage of credentials was that not only did they not feel comfortable storing their credentials on desktops, but accessing 8hands from different computers became a real pain as it required them to re-enter all their credentials over and over. 2. We have made significant improvements to the 8hands infrastructure, most significant one is that soon you will be able to access 8hands not only from your desktop but, well, from almost any device with a screen (more info on that real soon) :)

For this to happen, and to simplify both the user experience and the technical requirements, credentials are now stored on our secure servers.

Being social networking users ourselves, we care about our privacy just as you do about yours. Therefore, you can rest assured that we designed and built 8hands to answer our own strict privacy needs. On top of that, we enforce strong internal security policies, both administrative and technical, to make sure your information stays safe. For further details, please check our revised privacy policy - http://www.8hands.com/privacy-policy.

Also keep in mind that for some locations we also allow tracking of just "public" information, so for those "public" locations you do not require to enter a password.

When you add a new location, under "Add a new:" select "public profile" instead of "personal profile" and then select the service you wish to add. We may add more such "public" flavors or new/existing services, provided this is a need which will come from our users.

Keep in mind however, that for these "public" locations you will not receive all possible notifications from your profile, so we strongly encourage to track your own profiles as "personal" locations in order to experience 8hands' full user experience.

We hope this addresses your needs and reduces your worries.

We also hope you continue enjoying 8hands and stick around as we have some great surprises to be revealed in the upcoming months.

If you have any more questions, we're here for you.
